After years in the making, the Richardson Park Playspace is now a reality for Sevenhill locals, surrounding communities, and visitors.
Proud volunteers and members of the South Australian Country Women’s Association (SACWA) have worked tirelessly to make their dream a reality with the community space erected in the small township of Sevenhill. The Sevenhill SACWA, with its 51 dedicated members, was formed six years ago as a ‘night branch’ to accommodate for many of the members who are working women, mothers and caregivers. They aim to assist women and children in need in the local community and across the region.
Located just near the popular Riesling Trail, the space creates the perfect opportunity for families to stay active in the region. Adele Agars, Sevenhill SACWA President, says the playspace was designed by local Sevenhill SACWA members.
“Although it’s a ‘playspace’, it’s intended for all ages. It puts a smile on my face seeing adults have so much fun taking on the flying fox! We wanted to create a meeting space in a natural environment, which encourages spending time together whilst exercising outdoors,” she says.
“Locals are so proud of the playspace we have created and see it as a point of difference for our region. It has really drawn our community members together. Local businesses have also been so welcoming in recommending it to visitors.” Adele says. “There are so many ways to utilise the space… it’s not rare to see a crowd of locals form on a Friday night with some wine to share and delights from the local bakery.”
The project was funded through money raised by the Sevenhill SACWA members. $50,000 was raised through the hosting of many events held by the passionate members of the organisation. With the help of grants from Variety SA and the Government of South Australia: Recreation & Sport and a contribution from MP Nick Champion, the group were able to make their idea a reality.
Sevenhill SACWA are working on other improvements to the playspace with plans for an outdoor barbeque for all to use, and will plant more trees and plants in the area which will provide great shade. After seeing a very busy past few weeks over the school holidays, the members of Sevenhill SACWA are proud of the community hub they have created.
